Wanbing Huang is a London based womenswear fashion designer. She
launched her eponymous label in October 2016 at emerging designers showcase
platform Labelhood during Shanghai Fashion Week and soon gained traction from
both the Chinese and international fashion audience.
Her 2017 Spring/Summer debut
collection "Chaotic Order" was heavily influenced by the Belgian film
director Oliver Smolders' short film "Seuls". She used horsetail
hair, 3D embroidery, ancient weaving technique and innovative ring lacing to
mimic the subtle emotional upheaval of a suffering autistic child.
While her
2017 Fall/Winter collection "Beyond the Body" was a study the circle
of live and the idea of death, in honor of her deceased beloved grandmother.
Often seeing fashion design as
a form of storytelling, Wanbing utilizes special textiles to showcase her
observation and opinions on social issues, intimate feelings, while
simultaneously amplifying the beauty of a woman's body.
In her latest 2018
Spring/Summer collection "Memory Shards", Wanbing explores the
relationship between light and the ocean. "I took inspiration from my very
first memory of the world, the light." says the designer: "In
particular, I focused on the reflection of the light on the surface of the
water and rays of light penetrating the sea."
Born and raised in the affluent
costal city Guangzhou in China, Wanbing is no stranger to water and its
reflection. She uses custom transparent weaving to create a unique shining
aquatic quality that perfectly encapsulates the mood of a ghastly mid-day boat
trip, haunted by the otherworldly silhouette. Experted in textile innovation,
the Wanbing Huang studio spends months on developing the perfect composition to
achieve the desired alienated underwater feeling.
Wanbing Huang's singular vision
has undoubtedly caught the industry's attention. After just her first collection,
Nike invited her to collaborate on the launch of the highly anticipated new
shoe model Vapormax earlier this year. Her design was featured in the brand
global promotion short film "Experiments In Style" and the "The
Vision-Airs" exhibition at Art Basel Hong Kong.
In her mid 20s, Wanbing gained
a BA fashion creation technique degree in the prestigious Bunka University in
Tokyo Japan, before moving to London to pursuit further fashion education at
Central Saint Martins under the BA Fashion womenswear pathway. While working on
her brand, she has worked at Celine and Issey Miyaki and was selected as one of
the finalist at the school's "Louis Vuitton Project".
Wanbing Huang is now stocked
exclusively at the high-end select shop Dong Liang in Shanghai China.
